Three More Days

The kids only have three days left of school. Actually, three half days of school left. Couldn’t they just go all day Wednesday and get out Thursday at noon? No way, got to get those state mandated school days in so we get the funding! Forget the fact that the past two week they have done absolutely nothing.

We take SOL’s (Standards of Learning) tests here in Virginia – well I don’t, the kids do. All the instruction leading up to SOL’s is to do well on the SOL’s. Guess what happens after the SOL’s? Nothing, absolutely nothing, yet the kids still are required to attend school. Ok, from Reese’s perspective it’s the two best school weeks of all: Field day (P.E. all day long), field trips, picnics and no homework.

Makes me wish I was back in school! That‚Äôs the problem with those of us who don’t have jobs in a school setting. We don‚Äôt have that great feeling of no school in a couple of days. We miss that sense of relief or accomplishment in reaching the last day of school.

The first day of school is exciting. The last day of school is what it’s all about. Right Steve?

Randy. Randy. Randy. You know once the “powers that be” determine a certain amount of days in school constitutes an academic year, you simply can’t decide to play around with the bureaucracy using something as foreign to them as COMMON SENSE. That’s like expecting elders to consider something from your perspective. Just ain’t gonna happen. One of those fascinating mysteries of life.

I can only compare the excitement of the last day of school to the last day in the office before vacation……or, as has been near the top of my mind recently, 1-1/2 years ’til retirement!

    Yes-s-s-s-s-s!

Son 2 has been out of school for 7 days already because older kids are taking exams. He’s not really “out”. He has to stay “around”. I don’t think they want him to skip the country. So, he’s on vacation but NOT really. Go figure.

Randy’s mention of the last day of school brings back profound memories of my high school day in an Episcopal/ Anglican boarding school in Nigeria.

During the last assembly we would sing (actually bellow at the top of our lungs) one of my fav hymns

God dismiss us with thy bessing
    Thanks for mercies past recieve
    Pardon all their faults confessing
Time that’s lost may all retrieve
    May thy children (repeat)
    Ne’er again thy spirit grieve.

Of course their is a companion hymn that goes something like:
    God Behold us with thy
    blessing, once again
    assembled here……..
