The Smackdown on Mt. Carmel (Part 1)
It is by far one of my favorite events in the Bible, Elijah v. the prophets of Baal, the smackdown on Mt Carmel.
On this day, once again, the people of God will see a powerful display of His power. On this day, once again, the people of God must choose whom they will serve.
1 Kings 18:21 (NCV) Elijah approached the people and said, “How long will you not decide between two choices? If the LORD is the true God, follow him, but if Baal is the true God, follow him!” But the people said nothing.
While I see in Elijah deep concern for God’s people and sorrow for their passive acceptance of Baal worship I also see great exasperation. Make a decision people! Today make a choice! Reminds me of the similar words which Joshua used to challenge the people some years ago.
When Joshua made this similar challenge the people responded:
Joshua 24:16 (NCV) Then the people answered, “We will never stop following the LORD to serve other gods!
Of course had that been true, had the people kept their word, Elijah would have not been in this situation. Well at least the people gave Joshua an answer! For Elijah they remain silent, no words, no response.
Does Elijah care which decision they make? I believe so. But there is that part of him, evident in his words, that he ultimately just wants them to make a decision and stick with it.
If the people choose the Lord God, the best choice, great. If the people choose Baal, a horrible choice, fine Elijah moves on, moves away or dies trying.
We’ve long since settled the issue between Baal and YAHWEH. No temptation, that I’ve seen to worship and serve Baal.
But I’m still tempted to serve and follow other gods. There is still that competition which is easily ignited to hesitate between two opinions.
How long will I decide between all the choices? If the LORD is the true God, follow him.
My own frustration comes from those who don’t even feel there is a choice to be made. If they ignore spirituality, they feel it will go away. My own sensation of that other plane is so constant that I can’t help but wonder if it doesn’t still tug at them from time to time. But if they ignore it long enough, they are probably desensitized. And why make a choice about something that doesn’t exist?
Although we sometimes don’t realize them for what they are, there are so many “other gods” surrounding us and voices clamoring for our allegiance. And since they are often so disguised, it seems that new choices need to be made daily. Makes me glad, once again, that not only does His grace cover my bad choices, but I am also surrounded by a “great cloud of witnesses” to spur me on.
It also makes me remember a country song by somebody whose name I can’t remember. The lyrics suggested that the devil had blue eyes and blue jeans!
One of my favorite stories as well. So much going on at different levels. In the third year of drought, they pour gallons and gallons of precious water over the altar! The incredible victory only to find Elijah throwing a pity-party immediately post-event. I’ve done the same.
We aren’t tempted by baal worship, but there are plenty of idols out there vying for our attention. And too often I must admit I look that way. Usually they have six strings, but may have 4 or 12 or just produce sound!
This story is really dangerous. One of the kids from church in Bible Class one time doused a small stack of twigs with water then prayed for rain. She couldn’t believe it when it didn’t come. The same thing for when she prayed for snow‚Ķ
