I have no giftedness in any area related to home improvement. Our gate hasn't shut right for about two years. To my way of thinking, that means it's time to move.

Sanding floors is my gift. Really. It is hard work but have found that since it doesn't take a lot of brain power, I'm quite good at it. And I did it all with two handheld sanders.

Don't laugh. I actually have a sermon written which is called something like: "What refinishing floors and the walk with Christ have in common."

My grandmother (with whom I lived 10th grade through college) had hardwood floors and every few years she had them sanded and refinished. One year I told her I would do it for her ... save her that money. I was a fool! And I never offered to do that job again.

Are you kidding? Of course I rented heavy machinery! I didn't even think about botching the first room. Brilliant!

You didn't rent the big 300 lb. upright sander? You passed up a chance to use large machinery?I used one of those sanders once. Bought the large sheets of sandpaper and everything. Then I asked "How does the sandpaper stay in place"? By the sheer weight of the machine I found out. Worked good.

These days I'm loving the look of cement floors. Stain. Seal. Polish. Walk away and forget about it. Live. Love. Life.

I got lucky when I told my wife lawn edging was not my gift. I only have to botch the job once. Now we have a gardner.
