Say It Isn't So

We caught the tail end of the American Idol finale — tuned in just in time to hear those previously voted off sing I get high with a little help from my friends — which prompted this conversation.

Me – I get high?  This is a drug song.

Other Person In The Room – No kidding, where have you been?  Many of the Beatles songs are about drugs?

Me – What?  Really?

Other Person In The Room – Hello?  (followed by some inappropriate comment about my intellect)

So I did a google and guess what?  Many of the Beatles songs are about drugs!  See that’s what happens when you spend all your time in the realm of CCM?

Next thing you’ll tell me is that Puff, The Magic Dragon is a drug related song.

Innocense is a very beautiful thing. Now, humm a few bars of Yellow Submarine, Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, and Hey Jude.

Dude, you remind of that dude who did that thing. It was awesome!

Wait. Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds??? Plasticene porters with looking glass ties??? Next, you’ll be telling me the initials stand for L…S…er…D…oh, now I get it.

It’s a good thing you have OPITR around to lead you through life. You may have to do weekly penance at the Guitar Center to get up to speed on the last, oh, 40 or so years of music. Could take a while.

You do realize Iron Butterfly wasn’t singing about “In the Garden of Eden” don’t you?

There is a church in SoCal (I’ll not mention which one, but it’s very popular) where the elders banned the singing of “There’s a Stirring” because of the overt sexual theme! Makes me want to puff that magic dragon!

I’m sure John Denver never had any of that drug stuff in mind when he sang “Rocky Mountain High.”

There are so many of those themes in songs that I used to listen to. I remember watching some of the VH1 series on different bands where I learned so many things I didn’t like. Back then, I did not know nor did I think about some of their life styles. It’s almost disappointing to learn some of that stuff.

Is it bad that the Beatles did so much drugs? Most of their best music is clearly the product of drugs, and as you rather belatedly discovered, often about drugs. None of them appear to have died or suffered awful tragedy as the result of drugs and they revoluionized music and are widely considered the greatest pop/rock band in history. So, given all the evils we already know about drugs, were the Beattles actually better off for taking them? Or, are we better off for them having taken them? Or is Ringo really the walrus? You decide.

ok. i love the Beatles, I was actually meant to marry Paul McCartney (was too young at one time, and apparantly too old now.) Anyway, I agree with most of what stumptown says..EXCEPT, how can he say ‘none of them appear to have died or suffered awful tragedy…’
Has he not seen Yoko? John was definately influenced by drugs..it wasn’t pretty.
