The Way Home

We’re sitting here in the Boston airport waiting to begin the long trip home.

We thoroughly enjoyed our time in Gloucester.

It makes a big difference when you are vacationing with locals as they know where and where not to go.

We dug for clams on the beach (turns out the 12 year old has a nack for clam digging).

Nothing quite like eating freshly dug clams for dinner.

Unless of course someone can figure out how to dig for Krispy Kreme donuts.

We ended our vacation time with great fanfare by purchasing some lobsters at the market and having a simple meal of lobster and corn.

Simplicity, as you well know, is sometimes quite memorable and we hope to remember that experience for a long while.

The town of Gloucester has seen its share of success and sorrow (of late it seems more of sorrow).

Overfishing and the demands of the tourists (or outsiders) has taken its toll on one of the last remaining true fishing towns on the Atlantic seaboard.

With many thanks to the Irvings (our hosts) we look forward to more adventures on the Island.

Twelve

The boy turns twelve today.

What a blessing he has been to us.

Glosta

Gloucester (actually pronounced Glosta) is billed as “America’s Oldest Seaport” and is part of Cape Ann and located 30 miles northeast of Boston.

I read Mark Kurlansky’s book, The Last Fish Tale prior to the trip to catch a glimpse of the town.

A book, by the way, that I enjoyed.

Glosta is known for three things: Fishing, The Perfect Storm (Andrea Gail) and of late a Pregnancy Pact at Gloucester High School.

I’m looking forward to the experience and hope to enjoy some down time and avoiding two of the three things which made Glosta famous.

Flight Cancelled

Our flight to Boston was canceled today.

At the mercy of the airline we are rescheduled to leave 7AM tomorrow morning.

A frustrating part of air travel these days but there’s nothing you can do about it.

They said we could take a 10PM flight into JFK and a connecting flight into Boston arriving at 12PM.

Considering our earlier fiasco in JFK I, without hesitation, said NO!

The downside of course is getting up at 4:30AM (instead of arriving at 3AM).

But like I said, what are you going to do when at the mercy of the airline?

East Coast

We flew back to the East Coast to spend some time in Gloucester with some friends from Arlington.

Enduring a travel day full of delays and gate changes, and this just at JKF, we arrived in DC at 3 in the morning.

So much for the cheap flight.

We’ve spent a day and half here and so far I’ve been the chauffer.

We promised the kids they could see friends so I’ve spent most of my time driving them around.

I actually don’t mind.  It’s nice to see them excited and in good spirits.

We leave in the morning for Gloucester.
