Lunch

The campus of LHS is built around the great outdoors or the idea that it seldom rains in this part of California.

There are lunch carts around campus so students who purchase lunch have convenient access.

There is a “cafeteria” but that of course is for freshman and others who don’t realize that it is uncool to eat in the cafeteria.

Speaking of uncool – it’s been fun being told (by the kids- especially the daughter) what words to not use in class.

Come on, I still think we can bring back “keen”!

Students will look for teachers who allow them to eat lunch in the classroom and my classroom has been one of those areas.

The teacher I sub for is the kind of teacher who would allow this and thus takes teaching from cognitive instruction to affective instruction.

This has been a part of the day I look forward to because the guard is down and the kids talk about life.  It’s been good to sit at my desk and observe.

    Randy is clean,
    Randy is keen,
And loved by all the LHS teens.

Remember kids, “It’s keen to be a clean teen”

It’s a different world, isn’t it? One of the major factors in my decision to walk away from preaching and go into another (“secular”) field of work was the fact that I simply no longer really understood this present generation. Nor did I think I had the energy / desire to try and understand them, at least not from a ministry point of view because I knew my religious tribe was going to do basically nothing to bridge the gap between generations. And attempts on my part to bridge that gap were not going to be tolerated.

Groovy post Mr. Wray. The same effect you mentioned in regards to students and lunch also occurs on field trips. That’s why I’m keen on field trips.

Greg, I think you’ve just described what I’ve been feeling.

greg: your comment really resonated with me, esp. “religious tribe was going to do basically nothing to bridge the gap between generations.” I have found difficulty in accessing those in the family outside of my “demographic”; which is not how I was raised in the church. It is good to hear you expressing your feelings of necessity.

randy: I am just 30 and feel very much out of touch with the present teenagers.. i didn’t realize how much, until i went back to University. i really need to find a lunch room to hang out in, just to get a glimpse of where my daughter is headed…a lunchroom that is reassuring and not horror-inducing.

Today I got to experience candid conversation with a student as I was waiting for my next class to start (I am an artist that teaches at various schools in the San Joaquin County area). We talked about music and guitars.

I’m just impressed with your reference to “cognitive” and “affective” instruction. You are starting to sound like such a teacher. I remember the cafeteria at LHS, but there was a 2nd one for non-freshmen when I was there. It even had a Taco Bell Express.
