Mega Church State
The LA Times reports that “California has more mega-churches than any other state, with the majority in suburbs between Los Angeles and San Diego.”
Here’s a link to the article.
Maybe we could add “The Mega Church State” to all CA license plates.
We have more than a few in our area. The church Josh and Heather attend grew from just a few families to over 1,000 people in just over a year. In my years of ministry, they said 300 was a huge plateau to break. I finally broke it at Long Beach after years of struggling through it. We went from over 300 to under 300!
We have a few that would qualify, I guess, but mine would probably be termed “minor” in number………………..but not in heart and quality!
Or perhaps in honor of the “Govern-nator,” the slogan could be, “Don’t be girlie man, go to Mega Church.”
i am curious what the worship catering to mimes and strippers looks like.
there was an ellipses in the center of a quote on the first page that has me wondering was was said during the dots.
and i had to smile a bit over the proclaimed spontaneity of the services; i suppose a worshiper may feel more spontaneous, but to finesse and organize a crowd as large as they are pulling in–that takes incredible planning and forethought and educated people. —or i could just be cynical.
i wonder if the megachurches reflect more of their surroundings than just their desire and ability to cater to the more obvious cultural tastes, like the less obvious desire for a sense of anonymity, and belonging when it suits the attendee–belonging on our own terms.
